Thanks for the compliment, Denise. Last weekend I was in a place (Apoala) surrounded by high canyon walls (David was home sick with the flu). The reverberation of the cojetes (the fireworks that are all noise and no color) made our entire bodies tingle!
I’m moving to Canada in 2016…. a trip to Oaxaca just got a little closer in reach! I can’t wait to see and experience all of the things you blog about here. 🙂

Thanks. Weddings can be quite festive. After leaving the church the couple and guests parade up the street with a brass band, these dancers, and other joyous additions (I would have to post a photo!) Sometimes a person in front throws fireworks, sometimes they are drinking mezcal. You just never know!
Thank you for this! Someone told me about the ruins at Oaxaca, so I had to look it up. I was in the region in September to visit ruins in Guatemala, Belize and Honduras so would like to see the ruins in southern Mexico on my next trip – this gives me an idea of what I can expect.

Thank for sending me this link. I have not been to Copán, but it looks quite fascinating as are all these sites! It reminds me of Palenque in Chiapas, probably because it is also Mayan. The sites in Oaxaca are not Mayan and are thus different, though it seems they are all similar in some ways. In the area of Oaxaca city the archaeological sites are mainly Zapotec, such as Monte Albán. Mitla and Yagul are other major sites in this area.
The state of Oaxaca has over 1000 archaeological sites, many of which are tiny and still used by locals for particular celebrations. I hope you can visit here sometime, Oaxaca and its people are truly wonderful!

I was under the impression that the sites in the Oaxaca area are Mayan – so that’s very good informative too have. My understanding is that all the ancient cultures in the region in ancient times were influenced by each other – and that Oaxaca was no exception in influencing the Maya. I would love to visit there: Palenque is definitely on the map and possibly Chichen Itza too – so maybe Oaxaca too. I’m aiming for sometime next year! Will follow your posts in the meantime I’ll follow your colourful posts!
